Super Mall

RSP Architects create the grand retail experience in the heart of Palm Jumeirah

Residents of the Palm Jumeirah Dubai can now flex their plastics for some serious retail therapy at the new Nakheel Mall.

Designed by RSP Architects Planners and Engineers, the main goal is to create a lifestyle around the needs and desires of the consumer and connect social responsibility goals through creating a sense of place while capitalizing on the property’s target market.  A sense of place is made of four key elements; sociability, activity,   access and comfort to deliver a unique “retail solution” by applying the new design strategies as part of a holistic approach to market the mall.

“The main goal is to create a lifestyle around the needs and desires of the consumer and connect social responsibility goals through creating a sense of place while capitalizing on the property’s target market.”

Nakheel Mall comprises a built-up area of 422,390 square meters which includes a 5-star hotel, cinema complex, F&B Plaza, and Retail Centre. Spread over five floors, shoppers are treated to a mix of over 350 retail outlets, restaurants and leisure attractions, VIP entrance, two fountains and two waterfalls that pour from a height of 65ft into the mall.

As part of the Interior Design process, RSP has taken a White Elegance Mall Concept as the main concept of the mall’s interior, introducing minor theme variations to provide secondary identities to certain key areas inside the mall. The concept creates a stage within a series of experiences layered on a white background.

The three main avenues in the mall are treated as the three major features within the overall White Elegance Mall Concept. These areas are the VIP shopping wing, the Main Atrium which also houses the monorail and the general shopping wing.

The roof top plaza adopts an innovative concept that activates the roof of the retail destination. A one-stop destination for  lavish  restaurants and cafes that spill out on to terraces overlooking an array of landscaped gardens and fountains, the plaza also comprises leisure and entertainment  activities, events spaces including four artistically sculpted water features that act as nodes connecting to retail levels below.

The Retail Centre includes three levels of basement, used for services, parking and convenience shops. The department store can be accessed via the Promenade level which is also where the visitor and taxi drop-off exists. As the name suggests, the Entertainment level comprises cinema multiplex and food court along with retail stores.

Pockets of spaces to enlighten shoppers

The central atrium of the Nakheel Mall is truly a special space that provides a unique retail experience. The atrium connects at all levels of the mall through a stepping back approach and is the primary transition zone within the mall. The retail level at the base acts as a cozy, alley resembling a market place with cafes and kiosks. Balconies at higher levels step back to open up the atrium and allow visitors to get an all-round view of the mall.

Within the atrium space, visitors catch a glimpse of the monorail that passes through the centre of the mall. Flared columns support the rail tracks that are visible through an opaque customized structure membrane that allows natural light indoors and provides the shoppers with spectacular and conducive shopping experiences.

Destination roof plaza

The Roof Plaza is the focal point of the centre, reminiscent of the famous palm trees through the introduction of shades structures. These structures situated among natural trees at varying heights provide shade above restaurant tables and benches during the day. At night, the structures glow and offer a fascinating backdrop to the food and beverage outlets.
