Located west of Chengdu in the Sichuan province, the bookstore features gravity-defying staircases and infinite bookshelves which looks like it came straight out of one of Dutch artist M.C. Escher’s fever dreams. An article in the Smithsonian wrote that architect Li Xiang, founder of Shanghai-based firm X+Living, designed the 973 square metres bookshop, which draws inspiration from the Unesco World Heritage–listed Dujiangyan irrigation system. Certain architectural elements resemble water, nodding to the many rivers that flow through the city.

The Salt Box Residence is a 2,400 square foot home sited in the low-lying, flood-prone salt marshes of New Jersey’s Barnegat Bay. The client’s brief to Parnagian Architects was to design a lasting replacement for a multi-generational family home that had been damaged beyond repair during Hurricane Sandy. The site is situated at the end of a small peninsula, bound directly to the west by a commercial shipyard and marina, and to the north, south, and east by expansive views of the Barnegat Bay.
Today’s minimalism design is different from the clean-lined perfection of the past.
